Adios Afro!

Staff member Joe grew this crazy cool afro. It was a 12 month long project. Yes, that's a year worth of fuzz there! Here are some pics of the progress.

The idea for growing the afro was to have it all shaved off for a worthy cause after 12 months. The worthy cause being the Leukaemia Foundation, through their annual World's Greatest Shave fundraising event which Joe participated in. The shaving of the afro happened on Saturday 12th March...

Well done Joe and congratulations on taking part in support of the important work of the Leukaemia Foundation! We're all so proud of you! Also considering your aversion to sharing photos of yourself Joe, thank you so much for sharing these ones and allowing us to post them on the blog!

Photo Archiving Project

Group members are kindly assisting with the Crossroads Photo Archiving Project. This is Graham, busily scanning old photos that have been in storage for decades. The photographs document the history of Crossroads via thousands of snapshots taken during various programs throughout the years. Obviously the plan is to preserve the history of the organisation and to scan all of the photos so we have an accessible digital database of images. Still remaining are boxes upon boxes yet to be scanned...

Not only do we have photographs to archive, but also old Super 8 films!

Crossroads has always kept up with new technology, so once Super 8 films were no longer in fashion, fancy modern recording devices were embraced.

Many of us were excited over the discovery of this cute Polaroid camera!

film-making workshops

Following on from the success of the Short Film Festival which screened at the State Library of Queensland last year, Crossroads will again be presenting another later this year. Film-making workshops have recently commenced on Tuesday afternoons (3.30 to 6.30) at the centre at a very reasonable cost of $15.00 per session. Bargain! Participants will learn all about producing, directing and filming a short movie. Many areas of production will be explored, including script writing, casting, lighting, digital camera operation, sound and editing. Each participant will have an opportunity to complete a short film for entry into the film festival. Details of the Short Film Festival yet to be confirmed but it's likely to coincide with International Day for People with a Disability as it did last year.

Film-making workshop spaces are currently available. If interested in becoming involved phone Peter Bill during office hours on 3350 8500

21st Century at GoMA

The wonderful Gallery of Modern Art recently re-opened after having been hit by the Brisbane flooding earlier this year. Patrick visited the current exhibition, 21st Century this week. Pat appeared to enjoy the short films the best! And super exciting news is that GoMA will be having a Surrealism exhibition in June. I'm quite sure many Crossroaders will enjoy that one!

And here's a little surrealism joke...

Question: How many surrealist artists does it take to change a lightbulb?
Answer: A fish!

Huh? Not funny? Well Pat laughed. Ok, perhaps he was just being polite...
