An upcoming puppet show!

The Crossroad's weekly drama group (Dramatic Directions) have been busy lately creating puppets and madly rehearsing for an upcoming performance in celebration of International Day for People with a Disability.

A few of the puppets that will be appearing. A dreadlocked vampire, a chef and a giraffe. I also took a photo of one of the starring puppets, MC Jelly the Ghost, but when I uploaded the pic his image had vanished. Spooky!

Stuff in the making. Yet to be transformed into something cool

One of the almost completed set designs for the show

Barrel of puppets. They get up to all sorts of mischief when they think nobody is watching. Hopefully they haven't been too influenced by the crazy antics of the gang of muppets from the film Meet the Feebles...

Please excuse the poor quality of this image. The original file for the flyer was unable to be uploaded to blogger so this is a photo of the flyer. All are welcome to attend the show, so if interested simply turn up on the night!

Blue Skies!

"In June 2009, a handful of concerned Queenslanders came together for the Blue Skies Scenario Building Activity, which aimed to build a new vision for Queenslanders with disability and their families. The Blue Skies Group (as they have come to be known), includes representatives from a broad cross section of the disability sector. The group's goal was to establish a scenario that would ask people to consider an alternative vision for people with disability, their families and supporters." (excerpt from the Blue Skies website)

The Minister for Disability Services, Annastacia Palaszczuk MP and the Blue Skies Group launched the Vision For An Inclusive Community on Tuesday 22nd September at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. Crossroads (Qld) iCan (Inclusion-Connect-Act-Now!) program group members attended the launch, along with many other individuals and groups interested in contributing their vision for an alternative future for people with disabilities.

Patrick was very keen to contribute something to the Message Wall

Cheeky post-it notes bandits we are!

A Marathon Post!

A couple of weeks ago Crossroads (Qld) staff member Simone was one of the 45 265 people who entered the Bridge to Brisbane 2009 Fun Run. Proceeds from registrations each year support various charities and the major charity beneficiary for this year was The Heart Foundation.

After much persuading the modest Simone finally agreed to give us a few photos from the day to share here. These were taken at the finishing line.

Simone says "Here I am looking my finest! I ran the 5kms in the Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run, which actually wasn’t much fun, it was hot, there was a very big hill and lots of prams and walkers needed to be negotiated! I came 2323rd, which is the best place I’ve ever ranked!" (Speedy Simone!)

Congratulations Simone!

Weed 'em and Reap!

We at Crossroads love spring! So does our little community garden!

Above is a small sampling of what we currently have growing. Plump tomatoes, lavender, sweet strawberries, beetroot, corn, cute buds on our kaffir lime tree, paw paws, pretty flowers sprouting on our lemonade tree, and rosemary. Now as the title of this post suggests, we'd better go weed!

Our Tennis Star!

Crossroads had a fundraising sausage sizzle last Friday to raise money for Neil. Neil is a member of the Crossroads weekly Drama Program and has been selected to compete in the tennis category as part of the National Special Olympics in 2010 to be held in Adelaide. Approximately $150 was raised on the day from the sausage sizzle lunch, as well as a generous donation made to Neil from MP Stirling Hinchliffe. Money raised will assist the competing athletes with their transport and accommodation costs.

Crossroads (Qld) appreciates the ongoing support from Cr Fiona King and MP Stirling Hinchliffe. We thank the crew from Studio 33 for coming along on the day also. Congratulations to Neil on being selected. That's a great accomplishment and we are all so very proud of our Tennis Star!
